Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What is SEA Bridge and why do you feature its logo?

SEA (Social-Emotional Acuity) Bridge, developed by Bridges Learning System, is a neurodiversity-affirming curriculum designed for autistic and neurodivergent children.  It focuses on supporting their social and emotional development by fostering understanding and self-advocacy, rather than trying to change them to fit neurotypical norms. The program uses evidence-based practices and is delivered through an online platform, offering resources for educators, clinicians, and families.

I have undertaken extensive SEA Bridge training in order to administer the program to children, and I am a qualified SEA Bridge Provider.

What does 'neuro-affirming' mean?

Neuro-affirming is a perspective that recognizes and celebrates the natural diversity of human brains, rather than pathologising or trying to "fix" differences. It emphasizes understanding and supporting individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions like autism and ADHD as they are, rather than focusing on making them appear more neurotypical.

Do we need a referral to see you?

No, you do not need a referral from a doctor or another allied health professional.  If you have any concerns about your child's speech, language, communication or literacy skills, feel free to contact me.

What are your qualifications Elissa?  Are you a member of Speech Pathology Australia?

I have a Bachelor of Speech Pathology from La Trobe University (completed in 2003).  I have always practised in Melbourne, starting my career as a speech pathologist in the school system, followed by several years as a therapist at a children's Early Intervention service.  I have then practised as a private speech pathologist in senior roles at leading Melbourne clinics for more than a decade.

I am a registered Certified Practising Speech Pathologist (CPSP) with Speech Pathology Australia (SPA).  This means I have the appropriate registration to practise as a speech pathologist and participate in the SPA Certification Program which demonstrates a commitment to ongoing professional development.  I am also a registered Medicare Provider, and hold necessary permits to practise, including insurance and Working With Children Check.

Are you an National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) registered provider under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?   Do you see NDIS clients?

I am not NDIA registered, however clients who have a 'self-managed' or a 'plan managed' NDIS plan are able to access my services and claim a rebate for my services under the NDIS (subject to rebate caps and ensuring your child's plan has sufficient budget under 'Improved Daily Living Skills').  I am not able to accept NDIA-managed plans.
